From pros and cons of part/full time practice, building a body of work to marketing your work, this course covers the essential "bits and bobs" that every artist needs to know to thrive in the art world.

I am a professional artist since 2016, skilled in illustration, research, and printmaking. I founded The Printing Girls, a community for female printmakers in South Africa, promoting collaboration among artists. My work explores the blend of the ordinary and extraordinary, and I aim to empower fellow artists by providing essential tools and knowledge to advance their careers. a mentor, I guide artists in realizing their visions and aspirations, fostering a supportive artistic community.

Course Outline  

 

Session 1: What is Success to You? (1 hour)
Discover what true success means for you and create a personal ‘North Star’ that aligns with your values. Explore key considerations for building a successful career and the various forms success can take. The practical exercise involves using ChatGPT to define your unique North Star.

Session 2: Full-Time vs. Part-Time Artist Career (1 hour)
Examine the reality of a full-time art career, including its challenges and limitations. Explore healthier alternatives, such as balancing multiple income streams. The practical exercise involves brainstorming different income opportunities for yourself.

Session 3: Is Commercial Work the Root of All Evil? (1 hour)
Understand how commercial work can expand your artistic horizons. Learn about the different types of commercial opportunities available, and create a list of your skills and potential commercial applications.

 

Lunch Break (1 hour)

Session 4: How to Make a Series of Work (1 hour)
Learn why creating a series of work can strengthen your practice. Explore strategies for turning one good idea into a cohesive series and the benefits of this approach. In the practical exercise, draft a series plan based on a current project.

Session 5: The M Word (1 hour)
Gain insights into marketing and selling your art successfully. Learn key marketing strategies from Seth Godin and explore off-grid marketing ideas beyond social media. Begin developing a basic marketing plan for the next six months.

Session 6: Being an Art World Rebel (1 hour)
Understand the power you hold as an artist and how to use it effectively. Explore the pros and cons of the gallery system and discover alternative ways to exhibit your work. The practical exercise involves brainstorming innovative ideas for your next show.
